Real estate giant HULIC has embarked on a redevelopment project that will see an older office building demolished to make way for a new data centre in Nihonbashi.
This will be the first data centre developed by HULIC. The company is forecasting the domestic data center market to grow annually by over 5% in the coming years. With growing demand for high-speed and high-volume data transmission, there is a need for data centers in the city centre.
The existing eight story Kobunacho Kinen-Kaikan Building was built in 1982. Office tenants were fully vacated by the end of March, with demolition to follow. The new building will also be 8 stories with one basement. Completion is expected in 2025.
Significant DC Investments
Japan is seeing a significant inflow of data centre and related investments. A week back, AirTrunk, an Asia-Pacific and Japan (APJ) hyperscale data centre provider plans to build a new 110+ megawatt (MW) hyperscale data centre in West Tokyo, in an ongoing effort to strengthen its Japan presence.
In February, GLP announced a substantial plan to enter the (Japan data centre) market. GLP is a leading global investment manager and business builder in logistics, data infrastructure, renewable energy and related technologies.
