Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), which is the sovereign wealth fund investing on behalf of the State of Qatar, has invested in Anthropic, an AI player that has been attracting attention and investments from some of the biggest technology and finance players in the world.

Anthropic is an AI safety and research company, best known for the Claude family of AI models. Readers would recall that it was founded in 2021, and has since then attracted investments from Google, and Amazon among others.

Apart from QIA, other significant investors in this round led by ICONIQ include Altimeter, Baillie Gifford, BlackRock, Blackstone, Coatue, D1 Capital, General Atlantic, General Catalyst, GIC, Growth Equity at Goldman Sachs Alternatives, Insight Partners, Jane Street, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, T. Anthropic’s Series F fundraise of US$ 13 billion, brings Anthropic’s valuation at US$ 183 billion post-money, and was co-led by Fidelity Management & Research Company and Lightspeed Venture Partners.

“From Fortune 500 companies to AI-native startups, our customers rely on Anthropic’s frontier models and platform products for their most important, mission-critical work,” said Krishna Rao, Chief Financial Officer of Anthropic . “We are seeing exponential growth in demand across our entire customer base. This financing demonstrates investors’ extraordinary confidence in our financial performance and the strength of their collaboration with us to continue fueling our unprecedented growth.”

Readers would recall that QIA was established in 2005 to protect and grow Qatar’s financial assets, and to diversify its economy. Over the years it has been making strategic investments into Artificial Intelligence companies such as Elon Musk’s xAI.

In a post on LinkedIn, QIA said, the purpose of the investment was to “accelerate its mission to build reliable AI systems.” It further said that it would “continue to back highly innovative and competitive companies of scale with best in class technology, proven business models, and exceptional management teams.”

The Series F investment will expand Anthropic’s capacity to meet growing enterprise demand, deepen the company’s safety research, and support international expansion. 10:02:35
