Prime Data Centers, an international hyperscale developer and owner in partnership with Brunswick Real Estate, have revealed plans to build a 550 MW data center campus in Esbjerg, Denmark. For this they have acquired a 640,000-square-meter site on Nordre Tovrupvej from Esbjerg Municipality. The construction for the ESB01 data center project could begin in 2027, subject to approval after an environmental impact assessment (EIA).
According to a press release, the first phase of the project would include 160 MW in IT capacity and a DKK 15 billion (US$ 2.3 billion) investment. Prime Data Centers intends to construct the facility to the same capacity as some of Europe’s largest hyperscale data centers.
Nicholas Laag, founder and CEO, Prime Data Centers, said, “The collaboration with Business Esbjerg and Esbjerg Municipality has been both professional and welcoming. The way the process has been approached has given us great confidence that Esbjerg is the right place to invest, and we look forward to continuing the good cooperation in the further development of the project.”
Karsten Rieder, Director, Business Esbjerg, said, “After close cooperation with Prime Data Centers in the start-up phase, we now look forward to the upcoming planning and regulatory process.”
Jesper Frost Rasmussen, Mayor, Esbjerg Municipality, said, “Prime Data Centers’ decision confirms that our strategy works. We have focused on creating good conditions for data-heavy companies, and through close cooperation between Business Esbjerg and the municipality, we have been able to deliver the expertise and service that large international investors expect.”
The investment aids Esbjerg Municipality’s broader effort to attract digital infrastructure projects and data-intensive companies. Prime Data Centers is in discussions with Energinet about grid connections and power supply and selected Esbjerg because of its access to fiber connections, power infrastructure and district heating systems that could potentially use surplus heat from the data center.
