Telecommunications giant PLDT is forging ahead with its data center expansion plans even as it nears a potential deal to sell a portion of its business. The company recently announced the completion of its largest data center to date, VITRO Sta. Rosa, a 50-megawatt facility boasting cutting-edge technology and energy efficiency.
This development comes as PLDT is in advanced talks to sell up to 49% of its data center unit, ePLDT, to Japanese telecom giant Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT). The deal, estimated to be worth over $1 billion, is expected to be finalized by the end of the year, subject to regulatory approval.
PLDT Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations, stating that the company is “coming close to an agreement.” The proceeds from the sale are anticipated to be used for debt reduction.
Despite the potential sale, PLDT’s commitment to expanding its data center footprint remains steadfast. The newly completed VITRO Sta. Rosa is a testament to the company’s dedication to providing world-class digital infrastructure in the Philippines. As the country’s digital economy continues to grow, there is a rising demand for data center services to support businesses and industries.
PLDT’s data center business has been a key growth driver for the company, and the potential partnership with NTT is seen as a strategic move to further strengthen its position in the market.
