Petronas has achieved the distinction of being the first company in Malaysia to embrace a 5G private network tailored for enterprise utilization. This advanced network has been implemented at the Regasification Terminal Sungai Udang (RGTSU) in Melaka, which belongs to the dynamic global energy group. The primary objective behind this deployment is to enhance the efficiency of Petronas’ internal operations.

The inauguration event for this groundbreaking move enjoyed the endorsement and backing of the Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), as reported by Bernama.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated that this standalone network aligns with the aspirations outlined in the Madani economy and the New Industrial Master Plan 2023 framework. He also highlighted the transformative potential of 5G technology, enabling Malaysian industries to foster innovation and global competitiveness.

Furthermore, he emphasized that the deployment of private networks similar to Petronas’ paves the way for further collaboration between the government, private sector, and academia, unlocking the full potential of 5G technology.

Meanwhile, Petronas’ senior vice president of project delivery and technology, Datuk Bacho Pilong, unveiled that the deployment of the private network at RGTSU has led to notable enhancements in operational efficiency, safety, and support for the company’s business and sustainability objectives.

During the launch event, he underscored the significance of combining 5G with the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, and automation, positioning Petronas as a frontrunner in the global technological landscape.

In a related development, it has been reported that MCMC is collaborating closely with mobile service providers to facilitate the deployment of 5G private networks, thereby fostering the development of diverse use cases across various industries in Malaysia. As of now, aside from Petronas, no other local companies have publicly expressed their interest in adopting this approach.
