Asia Pacific’s data center provider, Princeton Digital Group (PDG), yesterday announced a partnership with Pertamina Patra Niaga to use Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a replacement for diesel fuel for its data centers in Indonesia, with an expected 70 – 90% reduction in carbon emissions, according to PDG’s press release.
HVO is a renewable biofuel derived from 100% vegetable oil, animal fat, or used cooking oil. Unlike traditional biodiesel, it closely resembles fossil diesel but burns cleaner, cutting greenhouse gas emissions and particulate matter significantly. By switching to HVO for backup generators, the company not only reduces carbon emissions but also lowers harmful pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and particulates resulting in cleaner air. The switch to HVO also signals PDG’s commitment to reducing its Scope 1 carbon footprint.
PDG’s adoption of HVO aligns with Indonesia’s decarbonization goals whilst also advances global efforts to move away from fossil fuels towards more sustainable alternatives.
“Our partnership with Pertamina Patra Niaga is a testament to PDG’s commitment to responsible and sustainable growth across Asia Pacific. The deployment of HVO in Indonesia marks a critical step in our strategy to reduce Scope 1 emissions, and accelerate the energy transition, while setting a new benchmark for sustainable digital infrastructure in the region,” said Varoon Raghavan, Chief Operating Officer and Co-founder of PDG.
Alimuddin Baso, Director of Central Marketing & Trading at PT Pertamina Patra Niaga said, “This collaboration with PDG is a significant step in our mission to accelerate Indonesia’s sustainability journey through strategic partnerships. As an Energy Solution Provider and Decarbonization Partner, Pertamina Patra Niaga, through our Pertamina One Solution platform, not only delivers cleaner fuels but also provides integrated logistics and infrastructure support. By providing cleaner fuels to critical infrastructure such as data centers, we are helping reduce emissions, while also advancing Indonesia’s 2060 net-zero goal and energy transition.”
Pertamina Patra Niaga as Subholding Commercial & Trading of PT Pertamina (Persero), Indonesia’s state-owned energy company, has been instrumental in ensuring the availability and scalability of HVO supply in-country.
