NTT Global Data Centers Japan (NTT GDCJ), and TEPCO Power Grid held a ground-breaking ceremony for a 50MW data center facility that will be built in Shiroi city in Chiba.

In a post on LinkedIn, the company said that the facility will support Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cloud computing, and will be powered by sustainable energy. It further revealed that the first data center on this campus will have a capacity of 24MW and is expected to be completed by 2027.

Readers would recall that the two companies had originally unveiled plans for the data center campus in December 2023, when NTT GDCJ, a subsidiary of NTT DATA Group Corporation, and TEPCO Power Grid, Inc. (TEPCO PG) had announced that they had agreed to establish a new company to jointly develop and operate data centers in the Inzai-Shiroi area of Greater Tokyo, Japan.

At present, NTT has one 21MW data center in Tokyo, and one 35MW facility in Osaka. Another 30MW facility is also under construction in Keihana, Kyoto prefecture. It is scheduled to open later this year.
