IBM to shut Melbourne data center in modernisation strategy

IBM to shut Melbourne data center in modernisation strategy

As part of the data center modernisation strategy for IBM Cloud, the MEL01 data center in Melbourne is set to close its doors.

The ‘older legacy data center’ will shut on 30 November 2020 after an extension was secured with IBM vendors.

The Melbourne data center was deemed ‘unsuitable for upgrading’ by IBM Cloud.

“IBM Cloud invests significantly in data center infrastructure. These investments include rolling out newer data centers and multizone regions (MZRs) designed to deliver a more resilient architecture with higher levels of network throughput and redundancy,” said IBM Cloud in a statement.

To assist in migration, IBM Cloud recommended three alternative data centers based in Sydney, SYD01, SYD04 and SYD05.

“By shifting capacity to our newer and higher-capacity data centers, we are providing clients with higher value services and a more resilient architecture with increased network capacity and redundancy. IBM will continue to provide full support to our clients as they migrate to these new centers,” said IBM to CRN.

In March 2020, customers of the Melbourne data center were informed by email about this closure.

“To help our clients best serve their customers and optimise their businesses, IBM continuously evaluates, invests in and modernises its data center infrastructure to ensure they can fully take advantage of the benefits of hybrid cloud,” added IBM.

On top of this closure, IBM Cloud will also close four data centers in Dallas, Texas, as well as one in Houston, Texas and one in Seattle, Washington in the United States.
