ABB and Ericsson to power Thailand’s Industry 4.0 transformation with 5G

ABB and Ericsson have agreed to drive Industrial 4.0 transformation using 5G in Thailand, a ‘first in Asia Pacific’.

In a MoU signed by both parties, Ericsson will become ABB’s ‘Preferred Connectivity Partner’ in Thailand, and provide ABB with 5G solutions to accelerate the customers’ digitalisation and growth in the country.

“ABB and Ericsson have long partnered on research projects in Europe to study the role and benefit of 5G in flexible automation and production,” said Gianandrea Bruzzone, Country Managing Director of ABB Thailand.

This MoU is part of a global partnership agreement signed between both companies in 2019.

“Our partnership in Thailand means we will work together to accelerate the full potential of 5G for industrial manufacturing, opening the door for new digital opportunities in support of Thailand’s adoption of Industry 4.0,” Mr. Bruzzone continued.

The partnership will see Ericsson deploy high-speed, low latency 5G in several of ABB’s key business areas, including its Robotics and Discrete Automation, Industrial Automation and Motion Services, as well as its Ability Platform Services.

“Our partnership with ABB will enable us to take the full benefit of 5G connectivity to enterprises across industries including manufacturing, airports, ports, oil and gas and mining,” said Nadine Allen, Head of Ericsson Thailand.

The collaboration will cover 5G enabled Augmented Reality Lenses for remote commissioning in manufacturing environments.

“We are proud and honored to be able to support Thailand on its journey towards Industry 4.0. Given our experience in deploying 5G across 61 live networks; we are well placed to transform and digitalise the local manufacturing sector,” Ms. Allen added.

ABB has been working in Thailand for more than four decades, with the advent of the first motor delivery to Siam Cement, while Ericsson has been present in the country for 114 years.
