Mitsubishi to build DC at former blast furnace site in Japan

Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi Corp. is reportedly planning to build a data center in Kawasaki, Kanagawa prefecture in Japan. According to a report in Nikkei Asia, the property is where JFE Holdings once operated a blast furnace. The project, which will reportedly cost ¥ 100 billion (US$ 664 million). Construction is expected to be completed by 2030.

This is the second such data center construction deal in Japan this month. Readers would recall that earlier in March, reports emerged that SoftBank and OpenAI were planning to invest ¥ 100 billion into purchasing and transforming a now defunct LCD manufacturing factory owned by Sharp into an Artificial Intelligence (AI) ready data center.

Meanwhile, this Kawasaki data center project also showcases Mitsubishi’s desire to expand its presence in the global data center space, beyond its role of providing power, cooling and digital technologies to data centers.

Readers would recall that in early March, Mitsubishi had announced that it had acquired majority interest in two fully leased data centers developments in Dallas, Texas at a combined cost of approximately US$ 800 million upon completion. In 2017, Mitsubishi partnered with Digital Realty Trust Inc. (Digital Realty), to establish the joint-venture company MC Digital Realty to build AI-ready data centers.

According to Mordor Intelligence, the Japan Data Center Market size is estimated at 2.32 GW in 2025, and is expected to reach 3.66 GW by 2030, growing at a Compounded Average Growth Rate (CAGR) of 9.51 percent. Further, the market is expected to generate colocation revenue of US$ 2,511.5 million in 2025 and is projected to reach US$ 4,981.5 million by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 14.68 percent during the forecast period (2025-2030).
