Meta Bets Big on AI with $65 Billion Investment

Meta Platforms Inc. revealed plans to invest up to $65 billion in artificial intelligence projects throughout 2025. CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined the strategy, which includes the construction of a major new data center and increased hiring in AI-related roles.

The data center, as described by Zuckerberg, will be a substantial facility with enough computing power to cover a “significant part of Manhattan.” Meta aims to have over 1.3 million graphics processing units (GPUs) operational by the end of the year, supporting the development and implementation of advanced AI technologies.

This investment will be utilized to enhance Meta’s core products and services, with Zuckerberg stating that it will “drive our core products and business, unlock historic innovation, and extend American technology leadership.”

The announcement comes amidst a wave of substantial investments in AI infrastructure, including a recent $100 billion joint venture by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle. Meta’s planned expenditure exceeds previous Wall Street estimates for the company’s 2025 capital expenditures.

Zuckerberg acknowledged the possibility of overspending within the AI sector but emphasized the importance of remaining competitive in this rapidly evolving technological landscape. He previously stated that while companies might be “over-building now,” the risk of falling behind in AI development outweighs potential financial losses.

In addition to infrastructure, Meta plans to significantly expand its AI teams. The company will be actively recruiting talent to further its AI initiatives across its various platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Meta has been steadily investing in AI in recent years, with projects such as its AI assistant and Ray-Ban smartglasses. Initial market reaction to the news saw a brief dip in Meta’s share price before rebounding with a modest increase.
