2 June 2022, 9am – 5.15pm, Melbourne, Australia – The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre Southbank
Melbourne Cloud & Datacenter Convention Arrives in Australia
Few countries have two cities which dominate the national demographic and economic landscape as Australia has in Sydney and Melbourne (mccrindle) Pre-pandemic, Melbourne was growing faster in terms of economics and demographics than Sydney. At end -2019, Melbourne‘s growth was attributed particularly to accelerating construction, finance and health industries. Key infrastructure projects were also helping improve connectivity and access across the city.
Relating the relative sizes of the two cities to current datacenter footprint indicates very strongly that Melbourne presents a very strong opportunity for growth in demand for both facilities and associated services.

9:00 am | Principal Address Digitisation & The New IT Playbook For 3 decades IT has had a predictable playbook. This playbook helps to govern the innovation, programs and initiatives that IT delivers for the business, but with changing business models and digitisation towards hyperscale Cloud, this familiar playbook no longer holds true. In this session we will discuss the changing role of the technology team, why the team needs to dissolve the thinking from the past 3 decades and how the new model creates opportunity for technologists to rethink their role and career paths within the industry. Matt Zwolenski, Chief Technologist – Google Cloud Australia & NZ |
9:25 am | Panel Discussion What have we learned from the pandemic about owning and operating data centers? Both Globally and Locally? After more than two years since the start of the pandemic, how have the factors which impact and drive data center ownership and operation changed? How has the data center responded in terms of delivering on its key tasks and responsibilities? And what will it take forward into the future? Speaker: Verghese Jacob, Chief Technology Officer, DCI Data Centers Adam Gibson, Global DC Partner Manager, Console Connect by PCCW Global Gavin Dudley, Head of Portfolio – Data Centres, Fujitsu Uvance John Duffin, Chartered Engineer – Instructor, DCPRO Training APAC |
10:10 am | Sponsor Keynote The challenges of power provision and protection in the era of hyperscale and sustainability The demand for data centre and cloud services continues to accelerate while the need to maintain availability and meet cost and sustainability targets continue to command priority. Data centre and hyperscale power protection sits in the middle of these priorities as the key means of maintaining availability but how is this set of technologies adapting to an era of energy and sustainability scrutiny? Speaker: Josh Egbers, Global Sales Manager – Power Conditioning, ABB Electrification |
10:35 am | Tea Break |
10:45 am | Technology Bench Presentation During Tea Break Sustainable Operations with Modern Infrastructure Management Software As concerns grow over the environmental impact of data centers, organizations are responding with aggressive sustainability initiatives to dramatically reduce their data center carbon footprint. In this presentation, we will explore what it means to be sustainable, common challenges on the path towards sustainability, and real-world use cases of how leading data center managers are successfully driving sustainable operations with modern Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software. Speaker: Nigel Hemming, Key Account Manager, Sunbird DCIM |
11:05 am | Keynote: Edge in APAC: how far has it come? Edge is now a maturing set of systems and technologies used across a number of IT deployment architectures. Speaker: Shalini Lagrutta, Chief Executive Officer, dxn.solutions |
11:30 am | Sponsor Keynote: Key considerations for Edge deployments outdoor and non-traditional environments Speaker: Mark Roberts, Director of Marketing and IT Sales – Rittal |
11.55 am | Keynote: A better ‘business as usual’ or Groundhog Day? Re-examining the post pandemic “skills shortage” While “skills shortages” are perennially a point of concern for the digital infrastructure sector, and despite a raft of initiatives aimed at improving the talent pipeline, the sector continues to lament the lack of suitably qualified and motivated personnel. Entrenched barriers to inclusion, skills mismatches and lack of a visible and attractive sector wide employer proposition continue to besiege the sector and deliver growth-limiting operational challenges in data centres in many jurisdictions. Speaker: Dr Theresa Simpkin, Associate Professor – MBA Director – Associate, University of Tasmania, Portman Partners Join Dr Terri Simpkin and a panel of industry peers as they examine why the capability shortage issue is still on the agenda, why it’s a complex problem to resolve and how organisations can mitigate the risks of falling foul of the global, post pandemic ‘great resignation’. The panel session aims to unpack some of the complexities and long-standing issues underpinning workforce challenges. Discussion will illuminate some potential responses to long standing barriers to mitigate the risk of ongoing capability scarcity. Speaker: Shalini Lagrutta, Chief Executive Officer, dxn.solutions Parastoo Amin, RMIT Student & Infrastructure Masons Scholarship Recipient John Duffin, Chartered Engineer – Instructor, DCPRO Training APAC |

2:15 pm | Keynote A fresh look at Data Centre Design, Protyping and Delivery As the world experiences a period of accelerated change, the entrepreneurial spirit of our tech sector remain as cool as a honey badger. Sure, those last couple years have put pressure on our entire supply chain, but somehow this has only accelerated the pace at which we innovate! This presentation explores some of the key drivers and challenges in data centre prototyping and delivery, and their relationship with solving real business-case issues; therfore serving the end-user in a meaningful way. Speaker: Charles Fortin, Managing Director, Nominated Architect, Collard Maxwell Architects |
2:40 pm | Keynote The future of digital infrastructure The enterprise data center is the foundational pillar to enable digital business and economies to soar. With rising cloud and data demands, spurred on by remote working and digitisation of industries, digital leaders need a platform to implement their digital first agendas and unlock the true value of data. They require an infrastructure that enables them to scale their operations, speed the launch of digital services and help them leverage emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, 5G and digital twins. Speaker: Guy Danskine, Managing Director, Equinix Australia |
3:05 pm | Keynote Destination Hybrid on the journey to Cloud Security Destination Hybrid on the journey to Cloud Security takes a look at the drivers and thinking behind moving security tools to the cloud and the new cyber battleground that has formed. We will then explore the issues that slow or prohibit cloud uptake and the subsequent need for many organisations to move to a hybrid (both on-prem & cloud) model for their security tools and the flow-on need for consistency and seamless automation across that tooling Speaker: Greg Singh, Regional CTO Security, Symantec by Broadcom Software |
