Malaysia-based renewable energy firm Northern Solar Holdings Berhad has secured a total of 189 megawatts (MW) for two data center projects in Malaysia, the firm said in two separate exchange filings yesterday. Its wholly-owned subsidiary Northern Solar Assets Sdn. Bhd. had accepted the two letters of award (LOA) to supply the data centers with solar energy under the corporate renewable energy supply scheme (CRESS). Both LOAs include a battery energy storage system (BESS) as well.
The first LOA was awarded by a Malaysian property investment and data center infrastructure developer in respect of 100MWac solar capacity coupled with a BESS for a data center with an annual electricity requirement of 262.8 million kilowatt-hours (kWh).
The second, awarded by a Malaysian subsidiary of a Singapore-based data center operator, provides 89MWac solar coupled with a BESS for a data center with annual electricity requirement of 233.89 million kWh.
The commencement date of both projects has not been finalised and Northern Solar will update once definitive agreements are signed. Both data centers will have a combined annual electricity requirement of almost 500 million kWh. The total value of both projects was not disclosed.
In October, Northern Solar had secured a RM34 million contract to develop a 9.5MW large-scale solar photovoltaic plant.
