Malaysia’s strong commitment to bolstering its digital infrastructure is evident through its significant efforts to enhance broadband connectivity and the ongoing rollout of 5G networks across the nation, according to Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
As reported by Bernama, Minister Fahmi stressed the vital role of a robust digital infrastructure backbone in supporting the growth of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, cloud computing, the Internet of Things, and blockchain.
He emphasized that the National Digital Connectivity Plan, known as Jendela, was launched to address the country’s infrastructure requirements, ensuring that Malaysia is well-prepared for the impending transition to 5G technology while sustaining steady national digital expansion.\
Minister Fahmi highlighted the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s leadership role in spearheading digital transformation through the development of digital infrastructure, creating an environment conducive to the growth of the digital economy.
In 2021, the digital economy became a cornerstone of Malaysia’s economy, contributing 23.2% to the nation’s gross domestic product. Minister Fahmi anticipates that this contribution will increase to 25.5% by 2025, exceeding RM382 billion.
Additionally, he emphasized that building inclusive digital societies is not solely a technological pursuit but also a matter of equity, fairness, and social advancement.
He stressed the importance of formulating policies that promote digital literacy, broaden access to high-speed Internet, and cultivate an environment conducive to innovation.
Minister Fahmi underscored the need for prioritizing the requirements of underserved and disadvantaged populations, creating avenues for their full participation in the digital economy.
