Malaysian Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has expressed keen interest in exploring and adopting Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to address domestic challenges in the telecommunications, media, broadcasting, and film sectors.
Minister Fahmi Fadzil told Bernama that he sees many opportunities that they should explore and take advantage of, such as the opportunity to learn, observe, share experiences and adopt what they deem appropriate for Malaysia.
“I find the technological aspects most intriguing because we came with an understanding of the challenges we face, and these could be some of the solutions we can benefit from,” he said.
During a recent working visit to China, Minister Fahmi emphasized the potential benefits of leveraging these advanced technologies to enhance connectivity, improve content production, and attract a wider audience.
One area of particular interest for Malaysia is the application of AI in satellite technology. The joint-venture agreement between Altel and Geespace on direct-to-cell technology presents a promising solution for improving connectivity in remote regions of the country. Additionally, Minister Fahmi highlighted the potential of real-time translation technology to expand the reach of Malaysian films and content to global audiences.
Minister Fahmi’s visit to China Media Group, a leader in 8K broadcasting, provided valuable insights into the latest advancements in broadcasting technology and the role of AI in production. He also observed opportunities for Malaysia to export content to China, including short-form dramas that have gained popularity in the Chinese market.
To capitalize on these opportunities, Minister Fahmi encouraged Malaysian media agencies, such as Radio Television Malaysia, the Malaysian National News Agency, and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia, to accelerate content creation and reporting that showcases the unique aspects of Malaysia and attracts Chinese tourists.
Beyond technology, Minister Fahmi also engaged in bilateral discussions with Chinese government officials to strengthen cooperation in media and broadcasting. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between the two countries to facilitate the exchange of tourism, food, culture, and economic content.
Additionally, a Malaysian mobile network operator entered into an MOU with a Chinese telecommunications company to explore technological solutions, such as 5G networks, for improving mobile coverage in Malaysia.
