LG Uplus Unveils Second Hyperscale Data Center in South Korea

LG Uplus Corp., South Korea’s telecom giant, has completed its second hyperscale data center situated in the southern Seoul suburb of Anyang, Gyeonggi Province.

The data center spans 40,450 square meters across three underground and nine above-ground floors, housing over 200,000 servers. Equivalent to six soccer fields in usable space, the center is set to commence operations in February.

This development marks LG Uplus’ continued commitment to catering to corporate clients venturing into cloud transformation and artificial intelligence adoption. One of its standout features is its cooling energy efficiency, which is twice as effective as its predecessors.

Utilizing external air to cool the facilities when the temperature drops below 24 degrees celsius, a fan system swiftly brings in cold air, while strategic design elements, such as a seven-meter floor height and improved wall insulation, aid in maintaining optimal indoor temperatures.

The data center also prioritizes sustainable practices by harnessing geothermal energy for cooling and heating, incorporating rainwater drainage blocks, and integrating facilities for solar power and fuel cells.

LG Uplus anticipates significant environmental impact, with an expected annual energy saving of 121 gigawatt hours and a reduction of 55,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

Korea has been actively investing in sustainable technology, including data centers. Implementing green practices such as energy-efficient cooling systems, renewable energy sources, and optimizing server usage can contribute to building sustainable data centers. These efforts align with global initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of digital infrastructure.

Last month, an extensive data center complex that is powered by solar energy was planned to be built in Korea’s southwestern region of Jeolla, Haenam district.
