Johor data center ordered to stop work, a first in the state

A video still showing Jafni verifying some information during the morning site visit.

A data center site in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, has been ordered to stop work, the first time in the state, following numerous complaints, according to a video viewed by w.media. The 30-minute video which went viral yesterday, showed state housing and local government committee chairman Jafni Shukor conducting a site visit accompanied by officials, residents and the press. In the video, Jafni was seen talking to a representative from ZData, a Chinese data center developer and operator. A residential area was also seen about 50 meters away.

The stop order was issued under the Streets, Drainage and Building Act 1974 (Act 133) for breaches involving dirty roads, earthworks, construction activities at unreasonable hours and the lack of any hoardings despite the project having started six months ago. According to a lawyer contacted by w. media, the stop order appeared to be valid as the breaches being complained were covered by the Act.

According to Bernama, Malaysia’s official news agency, Jafni said the contractors had been given two weeks to comply with five conditions, namely, installing hoardings, halting earthworks, stopping night operations, keeping the roads clean at all times, and ensuring the residents’ well-being is not affected.
