India’s RackBank Datacentres to use clean energy from ReNew Power

RackBank Datacentres has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with renewable energy company ReNew Power to power its data centres.

As per the terms of the MOU, ReNew will supply power generated from renewable sources to RackBank’s hyper-scale data centre in the country.

Further, ReNew will construct, own and operate a wind-solar hybrid power generation facility specifically to supply power to RackBank’s facilities.

RackBank would purchase power generated from this facility directly from ReNew, through “open access” mechanism, company executives said.

Open Access enables heavy users with more than 1 MW connected load to buy cheap power from the open market. The concept is to allow the customers to choose from a number of competitive power companies, rather than being forced to buy power from the local utility monopoly.

Sumant Sinha, founder, chairman, and CEO of ReNew Power, said: “All responsible organisations should come together to scale up clean tech innovations and commit to becoming a net zero company.

“As India’s leading renewable energy company, ReNew continuously supports numerous companies in achieving their carbon emission reduction targets. We congratulate RackBank for embarking on this journey and look forward to our partnership.”

RackBank is currently building 500MW of data centre power at its Chennai GigaCampus project. The site, which spans across over 40,000 square meters of land, is being built at capital commitment of US$1.2 billion. The company has also plans to build facilities in Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, and Hyderabad.

Narendra Sen, CEO of RackBank, said: “We are proud to build India’s first green data centre and are excited to partner with ReNew Power for clean power procurement. This initiative is one of the major check posts for RackBank’s vision of sustainable future, along with the several other green initiatives previously taken by our company.

“RackBank Hyperscale platform will enable 100 per cent clean energy for our data centres and through this partnership we can able to reduce 30 per cent power cost compared to power consumption directly from Grid,” added Sen.

The MOU also provides for the offsetting of non-renewable power consumed by RackBank’s data centres through green credits purchased through ReNew, ensuring RackBank’s data centres operate on a net-zero emissions basis.
