Indian Consumers Face Call Drops As Telcos Shift To 5G

Consumers have reported problems with call drops and call failures in areas that are seeing a switch from 4G to 5G. This has prompted the government to enforce laws requiring mobile operators to improve the quality of their services.

According to a senior Department of Telecommunications (DoT) official, telecom operators need to improve the quality of their services. As part of our efforts to resolve this matter, we have also written to TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) regarding the matter.

The official pointed out that quality of service (QoS) is the mandate of the sectoral regulator, adding that even legacy 4G networks are a concern.

Industry executives, however, said this is a temporary phenomenon and services will be better once all the handsets having 5G software updates are synchronised with the next-gen networks, which are also being rolled out at more places.

Market leader Reliance Jio and second-ranked Bharti Airtel have started rolling out 5G networks in urban areas and are expected to cover most of the country in 18-24 months. Vodafone Idea is currently offering 4G services only and has not started to roll out a 5G network.
