The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has allocated S$30 million to promote research and innovation in the field of green computing.
This initiative, known as the Green Computing Funding Initiative (GCFI), encourages collaboration between researchers from higher learning institutions and industry stakeholders to enhance the energy efficiency of computing infrastructure and software.
As part of the broader commitment by the Singapore government to decarbonize the information and communications technology (ICT) sector, the GCFI aims to address specific use cases that are not adequately addressed by existing commercial solutions.
IMDA plans to invite proposals from researchers and industry participants this year, with a focus on advancing solutions that contribute to environmental sustainability.
In a joint press release with the Government Technology Agency (GovTech), responsible for overseeing the public sector’s digitalization, IMDA highlighted the importance of managing ICT sector emissions.
While ICT sector emissions currently constitute a relatively small portion of global emissions, there is a concern that they could escalate if not effectively managed. This initiative aligns with the Singapore government’s larger goal of achieving net-zero emissions by approximately 2045.
