HKT plans a new AI data-center interconnect network

Hong Kong Telephone (HKT), a technology, media, and telecommunications company, plans to deploy a 3.2Tbps AI data-center interconnect (DCI) service in Hong Kong, to interlink multiple data centers with ultra-low latency connections for AI workloads. The network would enable AI infrastructure providers, universities and research institutions to access computing resources across different facilities for model training, inference and scientific simulations.

According to a press release, the DCI service will upgrade HKT’s existing 800Gbps AI network and will support technologies including Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA), RoCEv2, Multipath Reliable Connection and Ultra-Ethernet Transport. The network is planned to run on hollow core fiber between the Lok Ma Chau Loop and Tseung Kwan O, with latency 30 percent lower than traditional fiber.

Steve Ng, Managing Director, HKT’s Commercial Group, said, “This next-generation fiber network delivers ultra-low latency, high-speed, and secure data exchange to unlock the full potential of AI development across the city. It also lays vital groundwork for the Northern Metropolis, linking the Hetao area with existing data centers today while paving the way for seamless access to new computing resources as they come online across the region.”

The first phase of the project will connect Lok Ma Chau and Tseung Kwan O with completion expected by Q4 2026 and the network would support the planned Sandy Ridge Data Facility Cluster.

HKT’s AI Superhighway currently connects major data-center clusters in Hong Kong and the company’s AI Exchange in the Lok Ma Chau Loop. HKT is also preparing to extend the network to the Sandy Ridge Data Facility Cluster as additional computing facilities come online.
