Google Eyes Nuclear Energy to Power AI Data Centers

Google is exploring the potential of nuclear energy to power its growing network of AI data centers, according to CEO Sundar Pichai. In a recent interview with Nikkei Asia, Pichai revealed that the company is actively evaluating technologies such as small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) as a means to meet its ambitious sustainability goals.

The move aligns with Google’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions across its operations by 2030. As the demand for AI-powered services continues to surge, the company faces increasing pressure to find sustainable and reliable energy sources to fuel its data centers.

While Google has not disclosed specific timelines or locations for potential nuclear energy projects, its interest in this technology reflects a growing trend among tech giants.

Both Amazon and Microsoft have already announced deals to purchase electricity from nuclear power plants, underscoring the industry’s recognition of nuclear energy’s potential to provide clean, baseload power.

As Google and its competitors explore nuclear energy options, the industry will be watching closely to see how these initiatives evolve and whether they can help accelerate the transition to a more sustainable future.
