Google and BlackRock’s Climate Infrastructure arm join forces to accelerate solar power development in Taiwan. This ambitious partnership targets a 1 gigawatt (GW) solar pipeline, significantly boosting clean energy on the island’s grid and supporting Google’s goal of achieving 24/7 carbon-free operations.

The collaboration hinges on an investment in New Green Power (NGP), a leading Taiwanese solar developer under BlackRock’s wing. This capital injection will fuel the construction of NGP’s large-scale solar projects.

With net-zero emissions by 2030 as a driving force, Google acknowledges the challenges of decarbonizing Asia Pacific’s grids. Fossil fuels dominate electricity generation in places like Taiwan, highlighting the need for innovative solutions.

This partnership is a prime example of how companies can champion change. By supporting clean energy sources and emerging technologies, Google and BlackRock pave the way for a fully decarbonized regional electricity grid.

Google’s investment in NGP, once approved, will directly fund new solar projects. The company also plans to purchase up to 300 MW of clean energy, further reducing its carbon footprint. They might even extend this clean energy access to their Taiwanese semiconductor suppliers, helping them achieve their own sustainability goals.

This initiative builds on Google and BlackRock’s long-standing collaboration to push for clean energy adoption in Asia Pacific. Their combined efforts have been instrumental in shaping policies that enable companies to directly buy renewable energy.

The partnership follows similar Google announcements in Australia and Japan, showcasing the company’s unwavering commitment to carbon-free energy across the region. Additionally, Google actively participates in coalitions like the Asia Clean Energy Coalition, advocating for policies that promote widespread renewable energy use.

The collaboration with BlackRock marks a significant milestone in Google’s journey towards net-zero emissions and carbon-free operations. Both companies acknowledge the vast amount of work remaining, not just in Asia Pacific but globally. This initiative sets a powerful precedent for companies seeking to contribute to a sustainable future.
