Snapshot of the Data Center Market
The cloud and data center market in the Middle East is growing and evolving rapidly, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is at the forefront of the region’s digital transformation given its early adoption of technology, passion for innovation and favourable regulatory environment.
According to Arizton Advisory & Intelligence, the UAE data center market was valued at US$ 1.5 billion in 2023, and is expected to reach US$ 2.65 billion by 2029, growing at a Compounded Average Growth Rate (CAGR) of 9.95 percent during the forecast period.
Meanwhile, Mordor Intelligence estimates the IT capacity of the industry in the UAE to be 429.3 MW and expects it to reach 841 MW by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 14.39 percent. It further expects the market to generate colocation revenue of USD 5,575 Million in 2024, and say that this figure is projected to reach USD 12,897.9 Million by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 18.26% during the forecast period (2024-2029).
Dubai has been the uncrowned queen of this market. In its Data Centers | The MENA Report, Knight Frank sheds light on Dubai’s journey saying, “The creation of the Dubai Internet City (DIC) in October 2000 played a pivotal role in attracting innovative technology companies to the country. This influx served to emphasise the vital role of data centres in future business growth, and so data centre investment and development started to meet rising demand. Subsequent government initiatives, including tax incentives and regulatory frameworks, further encouraged the industry’s growth.” It goes on to say, “During the 2010s, international data centre providers started entering the market, enhancing the quality and global connectivity of data centre services. Ambitions, of both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, to become global technology and business hubs have meant additional government support more recently. This, coupled with a focus on sustainability and innovation, is solidifying the UAE’s position as a major data centre market.”
