GDS has sealed a 21-year renewable energy Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) with Cenergi SEA Berhad (Cenergi), a solar power producer and renewable energy developer in Malaysia,to claim Renewable Energy Credits, facilitating reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and advancing its target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
This agreement places GDS at the forefront of green power adoption in Malaysia as part of the Corporate Green Power Program (CGPP) overseen by Malaysia’s Energy Commission.
Under the CGPP, up to 800MWac of solar power can be developed by solar producers and secured by corporate off-takers in Peninsula Malaysia. GDS has successfully secured 22.5MWac of renewable power for its Nusajaya Tech Park Data Center Campus in Johor.
The renewable energy procured through this agreement will originate from Cenergi’s 29.99MWac large-scale solar photovoltaic farm, slated to be operational in the state of Kedah, Malaysia, by the fourth quarter of 2025.
GDS anticipates a substantial reduction in its carbon footprint, estimated at up to 38,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year. To put this into perspective, it’s akin to eliminating CO2 emissions from around 8,400 petrol-powered passenger vehicles driven annually or the electricity use of 7,400 homes for one year.
This collaboration not only underscores GDS’s commitment to environmental sustainability but also lays the groundwork for further carbon emission reductions and an increased reliance on renewable energy. Combined with GDS’s existing green data center technologies, this initiative sets a strong precedent for sustainable practices within the industry.
