Other local officials and partners of GDS also showed their support for the data centre project at the ceremony. Building a Digital Innovation Hub in Indonesia

Batam is a prime location for data centre development, as the Indonesian government has also outlined important plans for Batam as a key engine of Indonesia’s digital transformation and foreign investment-driven growth. Earlier this year, Indonesia’s Communications and Informatics Minister Johnny G. Plate visited Batam and spoke on the Indonesian government’s plan to build four National Data Centres (PDN) to support the implementation of the state’s data-driven, transformative policies, and drive domestic employment.

Nongsa will also be home to a state-initiated National Data Centre, that the government predicts will enable Indonesia’s digital economy to grow to 146 billion USD by 2025, and 315 billion USD by 2030.

Huang affirmed his confidence in GDS’ capabilities to deliver on the Nongsa project and bolster Indonesia’s digital transformation.

“As an enabler for success, GDS will bring in international tech players to build a digital innovation hub in Indonesia, driving demand for digital talent and increase the vibrancy of the digital economy. Our data centre platform will lay the infrastructure foundation to attract international tech customers in Batam, and in turn creating a tech eco-system and hub here.”

“With GDS’ data centre plans strategically located in the region, it creates vast potential for facilitating regional data deployment and ecosystems. As a world-class leading data centre operator, GDS is devoted in collaboration with local governments and corporations to accelerate the digital transformation process in Southeast Asia region as the infrastructure foundation.”

GDS is set to integrate smart solutions within its Nongsa data centre facilities, and utilise local renewable energy in operations. Upon completion, the data centre campus will have a total net floor area of approximately 10,000 sqm and an estimated total IT power capacity of 28 MW. GDS expects that the facility will be completed and in operation by 2024.
