Gamuda Energy Sdn Bhd has partnered with clean energy solutions provider Gentari Renewables Sdn Bhd to build 1.5GW of capacity through solar photovoltaic power plants paired with battery energy storage systems (BESS) to meet the energy needs of hyperscale data centers, the companies said in a statement yesterday. Demand for reliable power by hyperscale data centers in Malaysia is projected to exceed 5 GW of by 2035 making it an urgent exercise to expand renewable energy capacity. The new capacity will come under the national Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS) framework, said the statement.

The collaboration leverages on Gamuda’s proven track record in delivering 3GW pipeline of renewable energy projects across Asia Pacific and Gentari’s expertise in large-scale renewable energy projects. Gentari currently has more than 8 GW of total installed and under construction renewable energy capacity.

“With our combined strengths and bankability, we can support our data centre partner with a dedicated, sustainable and scalable pipeline of renewable energy to ensure these crucial DC facilities can operate at a reduced carbon footprint. This landmark partnership sets the model for future collaborations aimed at powering sustainable development across various industries in supporting the national net-zero ambition,” said Joshua Kong Sing Hoe, Director of Gamuda Energy.

Low Kian Min, Chief Renewables Officer of Gentari said, “Malaysia’s digital economy is growing rapidly, bringing with it rising demand for reliable and sustainable power. Expanding renewable energy capacity is not only critical for meeting this demand but also key to driving long-term growth.”

Days earlier, Gamuda Energy had also signed an agreement to collaborate with SD Guthrie Berhad to develop, own and operate solar power assets (including energy storage systems) with a target capacity of 1.2GW.

In May, Gamuda had clinched a US$ 345 million contract with Google for the sale of land and data center buildout in Port Dickson, in the state of Negeri Sembilan.

Gamuda Energy is a subsidiary of Gamuda Berhad, a leading engineering and construction company in Malaysia while Gentari Renewables is a subsidiary of Petronas, a Malaysian oil and gas company headquartered in Kuala Lumpur.
