Forestalia, a renewable energy developer, plans to invest €12 billion (US $14 billion) to construct three data centers in the province of Zaragoza from 2028 or 2029, according to a report by euro press. Forestalia plans to power the data centers, located in Magallón, Botorrita and Alfamén, with 50 per cent renewable energy namely wind and solar generated onsite and the rest through the national grid operated by Red Eléctrica Española.
Named the Búfalo Project, it is currently in the planning and permitting stage with the first facilities to be fully operational in the early 2030s. This is one of the largest digital infrastructure projects in the Aragon region to date.
Jorge Azcon, President of the Government of Aragon, said, “The technological revolution needs these infrastructure and they will be built where there is a government willing to bet on the prosperity and wealth they generate, but also where they have renewable and competitive energy.”
The Government Council has approved the Declaration of Autonomous Interest for all three infrastructures: DCM Data in Magallón €3.3 billion (US $3.83 billion), DCM Dédalo in Botorrita €3.3 billion (US $3.83 billion) and DCM Blue in Alfamén €5.4 billion (US $6.26 billion).
Aragon has attracted €70 million (US$ 81 million) from numerous global tech giants and regional companies, due to its abundant land availability, strong electricity transmission networks and rapidly expanding renewable-energy portfolio particularly for data center development.
Key investors include Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Blackstone, Forestalia, Box2Bit, Azora Capital, and Grupo SAMCA, collectively contributing tens of billions of euros. These investments are transforming Aragón into a hub for digital infrastructure, creating jobs and boosting the regional economy.
