Equinix, Inc. a colocation and digital infrastructure company, has signed a 15‑year virtual power purchase agreement (vPPA) with ENEOS Renewable Energy Corporation to source renewable electricity from the 121 MW Sanda Mega Solar Power Plant in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. The facility is among the largest operating solar plants in the country.
According to a press release, the deal is Equinix’s second power purchase agreement (PPA) in Japan and, at this scale, the largest vPPA in the Japanese data center sector. It is intended to support Equinix’s goal of powering its Japanese data centers with 100 percent renewable energy while addressing challenges in procuring clean power in the local market.
Kuniko Ogawa, Managing Director, Equinix Japan, said, “The landmark 15‑year agreement with ENEOS Renewable Energy reflects Equinix’s proactive role in accelerating Japan’s energy transition, by securing one of the nation’s largest solar projects, providing our customers with a robust foundation to meet their evolving, sustainability, digital and AI‑driven needs.”
Yasushi Onoda, President and CEO, ENEOS Renewable Energy, said, “Sanda Mega Solar Power Plant, which utilizes the vast terrain of a former golf course to generate 121 MW of clean energy, has the largest capacity among our company’s solar power plants. This vPPA provides the long‑term stability needed to foster a more sustainable future for Japan’s technology sector.”
The Sanda Mega Solar Power Plant is built on land repurposed from a former golf course and preserves surrounding forest areas. Under the vPPA, Equinix will receive renewable energy credits tied to the plant’s output over the next 15 years, locking in a long‑term supply of clean energy to help meet its operational and sustainability targets.
