Equinix Doubles Down on Renewable Energy in Singapore

Equinix today announced the signing of its second renewable energy Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in Singapore with Sembcorp Power Pte Ltd. This latest agreement will see Equinix procuring an additional 58.5 MWp of solar energy from JTC’s properties on Jurong Island, starting in 2029.

This second PPA, coupled with the initial agreement signed in April 2024 for 75 MWp of solar energy, will significantly bolster Equinix’s renewable energy portfolio in Singapore. The combined 133.5 MWp of solar energy will power a substantial portion of Equinix’s growing data center infrastructure in the country, reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to Singapore’s sustainability goals.

The solar energy generated from Jurong Island will be harnessed from 60 hectares of vacant land and the rooftops of five JTC buildings, including the Jurong Rock Caverns above-ground facilities and Jurong Island Checkpoint. This innovative approach to utilizing underutilized space will not only generate clean energy but also optimize land use.

Data centers serve as the foundation of the digital economy, yet the increasing energy demands of AI are impacting national power constraints and emissions targets,” said Yee May Leong, Managing Director, Singapore, Equinix. “Equinix is actively addressing these challenges by implementing efficiency best practices and energy procurement strategies that align with our environmental commitments.

Equinix’s commitment to sustainable operations aligns with the Singapore government’s vision of transforming Jurong Island into a sustainable energy and chemicals park.
