Equinix, Inc., a leading global digital infrastructure company, has today announced the completion of the second phase of its KL1 International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data center in Cyberjaya, about 30km from Kuala Lumpur city centre, Malaysia. This latest expansion will add 450 cabinets to the KL1 facility, which when fully built, will provide 900 cabinets and 2,630 square metres of colocation space, according to Equinix press release.

Launched in 2024, the first phase of KL1 provides 450 cabinets and colocation space of 1,300 square meters. In July 2024, Equinix had acquired 14,300 square meters of land located less than one kilometre from KL1, according to Equinix’s earlier press release. The land will serve as a strategic complement to KL1, enabling the internet connectivity and collocation specialist to address the rising demand for data center services across diverse sectors including cloud and IT services, content and digital media, enterprises, and network providers in the region.

It is understood that an upcoming second data center in Johor is currently being developed. Equinix has informed W. Media that it would announce any latest progress “when more information becomes available”.

In the meantime, the company has interconnected its Malaysia data centers (KL1 and JH1) with its existing data center campus in Singapore via Equinix Fabric®, creating a cross-border digital ecosystem of more than 1,000 companies across cloud and network services, IT, financial services companies and enterprises within the region. Further, once its data centers are fully set up in Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand, this would facilitate seamless business exchanges and enable customers to deploy multi-site, latency-sensitive workloads across the ASEAN region.

“We’ve seen encouraging momentum over the past year, with both our Kuala Lumpur and Johor facilities gaining traction among local and international businesses,” said Cheam Tat Inn, Managing Director of Malaysia, Equinix. “Completing KL1’s second phase within the first year of our operation in Malaysia signals our deep commitment to helping the nation become a strategic location in the region’s digital economy.”

Equinix’s expansion in Malaysia represents a long-term investment in the nation’s digital growth, he added.
