Equinix and the Centre for Energy Research & Technology (CERT) under the National University of Singapore’s College of Design and Engineering (NUS CDE) today announced a groundbreaking partnership to establish a Co-Innovation Facility (CIF) in Singapore. This joint venture aims to accelerate the development and testing of innovative solutions that prioritize low-carbon energy, high-efficiency cooling, circularity, and energy efficiency optimization for data centers.
The CIF, to be housed within Equinix’s upcoming SG6 International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data center, will serve as an open research hub for industry leaders, technology partners, academic institutions, and customers. This collaborative platform will enable the co-development and testing of cutting-edge technologies that enhance reliability, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
With an initial investment of US$4 million from Equinix, the CIF will focus on several key areas such as Renewable Energy Integration which they will be exploring the integration of clean and renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, to reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuel-based energy.
They will also be focusing on Advanced Cooling Technologies which will be implementing innovative cooling solutions, like liquid cooling, to optimize energy consumption and improve overall data center efficiency.
Moreover, they will also be leveraging AI and ML to optimize energy usage, predict maintenance needs, and enhance operational efficiency. And will be utilizing digital twin models to simulate and analyze data center performance, enabling predictive maintenance and proactive upgrades.
Yee May Leong, Managing Director, Singapore, Equinix, emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change and the need to embed sustainable practices into every aspect of operations.
The CIF is scheduled to open in Q1 2027 and will serve as a catalyst for sustainable innovation in the data center industry.
