Digital Realty Unveils NRT12, Second Data Center in Tokyo Metropolitan Area

Digital Realty has revealed the inauguration of NRT12, its latest data center situated at the NRT campus within Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture. This expansion contributes an additional 34 megawatts (MW) of crucial IT capacity to the campus, raising the total to 73 MW. This augmentation aims to cater to the escalating demand for adaptable, versatile, and AI-prepared data centers in the Tokyo metropolitan vicinity.

The surge in digital transformation alongside the utilization of AI is propelling a remarkable surge in data volume across Japan. Consequently, enterprises are reassessing their IT frameworks, embracing a data-focused, hybrid IT strategy to accommodate intricate data flows.

This shift is fostering a call for contemporary data centers that are both flexible and scalable, equipped to meet the robust computing requirements of emerging technologies like AI/Generative AI. Given Tokyo’s status as a primary business hub, close proximity to such locations is essential.

To fulfill this demand, Digital Realty is expanding its capacity at the strategically positioned NRT campus through MC Digital Realty (MCDR), its joint venture in Japan with Mitsubishi Corporation.

NRT12 mirrors the resilient and adaptable infrastructure evident in other recent data centers developed by MCDR in Japan, such as the nearby NRT10 in Inzai and KIX13 in Osaka. Specifically engineered to accommodate demanding workloads like AI/Generative AI, machine learning, and virtual reality, NRT12 offers high-density power of up to 70 kilowatts (kW) per rack, incorporating innovative Air-Assisted Liquid Cooling (AALC) technologies.
