Digital Realty Introduces Cooling Tower Initiative for Enhanced Water Conservation in Singapore Data Center

Digital Realty has unveiled a cooling tower initiative at its SIN10 data center in Singapore that allows the pool of water to be used two additional times before eventually discharging it as wastewater.

The cooling tower initiative represents a pioneering step in Singapore’s data center industry and Digital Realty plans to extend this technology to its two other data centers. Since being implemented in February, there has been a reported 15% improvement in water usage efficiency (WUE) at SIN10.

This move aligns with Singapore’s ongoing commitment to promoting sustainable practices. In June, Singapore launched new standards for data centers, which are designed to optimize energy efficiency in tropical climates and are the first of their kind anywhere in the world. The new standard announced by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) aims to help data centers develop a roadmap to support the gradual increase in the data center operating temperatures to 26°C and above. This could lead to data centers potentially benefiting from a 2% to 5% cooling energy savings, with every 1°C increase in the operating temperature.

Singapore is also embarking on a significant project called the Digital Connectivity Blueprint to enhance its internet and technology infrastructure. The country aims to reinforce its status as an open economy and highly connected hub in Asia by increasing the number of submarine cable landing facilities.

Among the other data centers located in Singapore include ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), Princeton Digital Group, Keppel Data Centres, Equinix, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, IBM, Verizon and AirTrunk. Singapore is the hub for data centers in the region due to its stable infrastructure and network, pro-business environment, and skilled workforce.
