Event Summary

S&P Global Market Intelligence has conducted research on 12 markets across Asia Pacific which shows that this region has the most rapid growth in the OTT service industry. China, Japan and South Korea are specifically leading the rapid growth of the OTT industry in Northeast Asia.

Data has shown that the rivalry between the subscription fee revenue from OTT services and traditional pay TV revenue in the Chinese market will arise over the next five years. The total SVOD revenue in the Chinese market is expected to hit up to 94.8% of traditional TV channel revenue by 2022.

In Japan, video streaming has become an increasingly competitive business as the market has conveyed strong potential growth in recent years.

It is estimated that the combined market size of SVoD, TVoD and EST has almost doubled between 2015 and 2019. The number of subscribers to video-on-demand services in Japan is expected to be increased to nearly 21 million by 2021.

According to the annual report released by the Korea Film Commission (KOFIC), total revenues from movie services on OTT platforms reached 71.8 billion won ($58.1 million) in 2019, increased by 54.1 billion won in the previous year. According to the Korea Communications Commission (KCC), OTT usage in South Korea will be 66.3% in 2020, increased by 14.3 percentage points from the previous year.

The rapid growth of the market has attracted more and more players, with fierce competition between foreign and local platforms represented by Netflix, Disney, Hulu and others. In Japan and South Korea, Netflix is rapidly emerging and increasingly dominant, while in China, local companies represented by Youku, Akiy, Tencent, etc. are fighting it out.

OTT service providers are seeking to stand out by providing the best online experience for their customers.

What exactly is the competitive landscape of the Northeast Asian OTT market? How is the industry regulated in different countries? W.Media will focus on these topics and invite industry experts to share cutting-edge industry information and market insights.

This will be an insightful bilingual event (English/Chinese), register now to find out more!
