DayOne to invest EUR 1.2 billion in data center in Finland

DayOne, a Singapore-based data center developer and operator, yesterday announced a EUR 1.2 billion investment in a hyperscale data center campus in Lahti, Finland, the company said in a press release. The project will begin initially with a first building of 50 megawatts (MW) IT load reaching eventually a total potential capacity of 128 (MW) IT load. Construction will commence with site demolition in Q3 2025, and operations are scheduled to be ready for service in 2027.

The company said negotiations with potential tenants are still in progress.

The campus which will be located on a 98,901 square meters site in the neighborhood of Kiveriö, will be built with sustainability as a top priority leveraging on Finland’s cool climate for free cooling in collaboration with local engineering firms, as well as using air cool chiller technology to eliminate the need for freshwater cooling.

The company has also signed agreements with Lahti Energy and the city of Lahti, to strengthen local energy grid resilience and align with Lahti’s sustainability and circular economy goals. Reusing waste heat and integrating its data center into the local district heating system are also being explored by the company.

In addition, DayOne said it will sign a Growth Partnership Agreement with the City of Lahti, Lahti Region Development LADEC, Lahti Energy, and local educational institutions, to commit to long-term cooperation in advancing Lahti’s carbon neutrality goals, strengthening the local business and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) education ecosystems, and fostering skills development including a EUR 2.5 million commitment to LUT Universities.

This will directly benefit Lahti’s digital economy including creating 100 direct skilled positions and employing 1,000 construction workers onsite at its construction peak.

“Finland is an ideal strategic choice for our European growth,” said Jamie Khoo, CEO of DayOne Data Centers. “With its reliable energy infrastructure, renewable energy leadership, highly skilled workforce, and naturally favorable climate that significantly reduces energy consumption and operational costs, Finland offers unique advantages that align perfectly with our commitment to sustainable digital infrastructure. Recognised as European Green Capital 2021, Lahti is advancing towards carbon neutrality, making it a natural fit with DayOne’s sustainability goals.”

In Finland, DayOne is also jointly invested with Finnish company Hyperco in the Kouvola data center.
