Datacom has acquired T4 NZ Data Centres’ 5200 sqm Auckland data centre, bringing its total footprint to five data centres across the country and two in Auckland. The company said that as AI adoption accelerates, the demand for sovereign, in-country digital infrastructure is rising fast. This investment strengthens New Zealand’s compute capacity and provides the geo-diversity organisations need to remain resilient in an increasingly uncertain economic environment.

Datacom said that as a locally owned and operated company that has supported government and business for more than 60 years, it is focused on building infrastructure that enables long-term growth, security and confidence. With our its existing New Zealand data centres, this new acquisition and planned investment in the site, Datacom said it has now committed more than NZD 200m to data centre capability in New Zealand – with further greenfield investment opportunities firmly in focus.

The company explained if it was building this capability from scratch today, the cost would be significantly higher. “That underlines the enduring value of investing early, locally and with purpose,” it stated. The purchase price was not disclosed.

Datacom chief executive Greg Davidson told the NZ Herald that the acquisition reflects the growing importance of sovereign infrastructure. T4’s Auckland facility, known as Tihi which means summit or best, is a Tier 3+ data centre designed by IBM and certified for use by New Zealand government agencies under the All-of-Government (AOG) and Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) frameworks. Located 30 metres above sea level, Tihi sits outside Auckland’s volcanic field and flood plains, and away from flight paths, offering a high level of physical resilience.

The site features dual power feeds, diverse fibre connectivity, and three separate transport routes, ensuring continuous operation and redundancy. T4 guaranteed 100 percent availability and the site holds ISO 9001, 14001 and 27001 certifications, covering quality management, environmental management, and information security standards. The facility’s location provides direct line of sight to Auckland’s Sky Tower, enabling strong connectivity and potential for low-latency communications.

It has circa 500 rack spaces available and is the largest pillarless DC in NZ. It also has 250kW of chilled water available per rack for direct water cooling so ready for AI.
