Cisco has announced that it will build data centers in Mumbai and Chennai to cater to its contact center services in India. This local presence supports compliance with India’s telecom regulations, and data residency requirements.

Data residency has increasingly drawn attention across South Asia and the Middle East. India has its own Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 that establishes a framework for the processing of personal data in India. The Act also has provisions surrounding cross-boarder data processing, and provisions surrounding restrictions related to the financial data of Indian citizens and entities. This has prompted investments by global technology giants into creating digital infrastructure to store and process the data of Indians in India itself.

In a press release, Cisco said, “As organizations across India and multinational corporations with a presence in the region accelerate their digital transformation journeys, the need for secure, high-performance, and compliant cloud contact center solutions has never been greater.” It further explained, “With the new data center located in Mumbai, Webex Contact Center will offer Indian organizations the assurance of local data residency, enhanced security, and reduced latency.”

The two new data centers will support Cisco’s Webex Calling and Contact Center services, which entail an AI-powered platform including intelligent AI agents. Launching in Q2 CY2026, the expanded Webex Contact Center offering will be hosted in Mumbai, and designed to meet the specific regulatory and privacy requirements of the Indian market.
