Local authorities have announced that China’s southwestern Province of Guizhou currently has 39 significant data centers either in operation or under construction.
Data development administration bureau has also revealed that the area has grown to become one of the nation’s leading regions due to considerable data center development. The region of China has undertaken various industrial developments in recent times, rapidly transforming itself into an innovation hub; including the manufacturing of batteries and materials as well as expansion into the digital economy.
Guizhou’s location is optimum for stable equilibrium – allowing for data centers to thrive in this area. In terms of geography, it is not located near plate boundaries which cause earthquakes and its cool climate with regular temperatures of around 16°C means that facilities are kept secure, reducing cooling expenses.
Considerable growth has gained keen interest from a number of tech giants, including providing established residency for the likes of businesses Huawei and Tencent. In 2021, Apple announced the official opening of its first domestic data center over three years since it began construction to store customer data within the country’s borders. Run by Guizhou-Cloud Big Data (GCBD), the center began operations that same year.
The Deputy Director of the Bureau, Lou Song, has announced that the province’s digital economy has hit 18.1% across the last five years, subsequently ranking first in China. Digital transformation and business growth has been heavily promoted in Guizhou, with GDP rising from 23.6% in 2017 to 39.1% in 2022.
