China Targets 100% 5G Coverage in Border Regions by 2025

China aims to extend 5G network access to all border regions and inhabited offshore islands, achieving 100% coverage by the end of 2025, as per a notice from 13 government departments.

By the same deadline, counties, townships in border areas will have 5G and gigabit optical network access, and broadband access in targeted regions like inhabited islands will hit 100%.

High-speed mobile network coverage along border highways and continental offshore areas is planned by 2025, with a further push by 2027 for over 95% 5G coverage in border areas.

The initiative includes upgrading broadband networks on islands, exploring submarine cables, satellites, and microwaves for better connectivity, covering specific regions in nine border provinces and autonomous regions, and strengthening digital services and transformation in border areas.

China has been actively improving mobile signal coverage, with plans to enhance communication networks by 2024. In its pursuit of advancing the digital and intelligent evolution of its real economy, China has been steadily advancing the construction of its 5G network

Moreover, China is also eyeing the commercialization of 6G by 2030, with standardization expected around 2025, according to Wang Zhiqin, leader of China’s 6G promotion team.
