The Asia-Pacific region is leading the global datacenter industry with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (“CAGR”) of 12% and is expected to reach US$28 billion in 2021, becoming the world’s largest datacenter market. At the top of this wave is the two largest economies of China and Southeast Asia.
In China, the industry is developing rapidly, owning the second-largest number of datacenters in the world, after the United States, with an annual growth rate of more than 20% both in terms of quantity and scale. At an industry level, 5G, IoT, the industrial Internet and digital transformation abounds with waves of good news, propelled by the “new infrastructure” policy. From 2021 to 2022, China’s datacenter industry will usher in an outbreak period of landing and production.
In the Southeast Asia (“SEA”), market growth is expected to hit CAGR of 13% from 2019 to 2024. Amongst SEA, Singapore ranks third in the global datacentre market of 38 countries and is the only mature market. Vietnam, on the other hand, recently announced its 2025 National Digital Transformation Plan and 2030 Development Direction, whereas Malaysia has developed a “dual-core” datacenter deployment plan. Meanwhile, the Thailand government is strengthening domestic communication and network infrastructure to support the construction of hyper-large datacenters.
Such rapid growth and expansion of the Asian datacenter industry has increased competition amongst new entrants. However, whilst many will be enticed by the huge market potential and opportunities, whether it is the Chinese companies expanding to SEA or others looking to enter the Chinese market, they are set to face steep challenges in the various countries. To name a few; geographic landscape, imperfect infrastructure, policy constraints, business culture differences, and geopolitical instability all pose significant risks.
Hence, W.Media is convening datacenter experts to offer an insider peek into the world’s two fastest-growing markets. Join us as we hear from industry leaders on the current situation, opportunities and challenges of the China and SEA market, and what you can expect in 2021 and beyond.
