CDC Sydney, September 14: Christopher Quint of ENEL X on turning electricity use into a competitive advantage

Christopher Quint, Senior Business Development Manager at ENEL X will be joining the panel Enel X is supporting on “Power FIexibility: Turning electricity use into a competitive advantage”. The title brings together two expressions not usually found together in the same sentence.

The practice of large consumers of electricity intelligently altering when they consume grid power is called demand flexibility. Enel X operates Australia’s largest virtual power plant and has been aggregating demand flexibility from commercial and industrial partners since 2009. Chris has been with Enel X since 2013, and over that time data centre participation in demand flexibility programs has grown rapidly.

Chris describes demand flexibility as “one of the industry’s best kept secrets”. By intelligently switching over to backup systems when the grid is under stress, data centres earn revenue from the energy market, which can significantly reduce their energy and operating costs. Providing demand flexibility also helps the grid avoid outages and supports the transition to net zero by firming the supply of renewable power.

Chris and the panel will explore what opportunities there are for data centre providers to provide demand flexibility and turn their electricity use into a competitive advantage.
