Green data center provider, Basis Bay yesterday launched what it claims to be the ‘world’s first Eco-Green data centre’ in Cyberjaya, Malaysia, jointly developed with ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), according to reports and a press release from Malaysia’s Digital Ministry. Witnessed by Malaysia’s Minister of Digital, Gobind Singh Deo, the Basis Bay Data Centre 2 (DC2) is a Rated-4 facility serving mainly financial institutions and government.

DC2 is the first building out of two that were planned to be built on three acres of land, delivering 20MW of IT load. According to the company’s marketing information, DC2 operates as a “regenerative system that integrates architecture, environment, and technology into a cohesive whole.”  The building incorporates ecological design through a layered composition of vertical planting, circulation, and shading. The living facade reduces solar heat gain, supports biodiversity, and mitigates the urban heat island effect. The company said it is currently working towards Platinum recognition following its approval for GBI Gold and LEED Gold certification.

The building’s rooftop is 70 per cent covered by photovoltaic panels, which is expected to generate more than 630,500 kWh of clean energy annually, contributing to a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.49 – exceeding global benchmarks. Rainwater harvesting systems, permeable paving, and efficient plumbing fittings reduce potable water consumption by 60 per cent, saving more than 1,100 cubic metres annually. Stormwater is absorbed and filtered through bioswales, enhancing groundwater recharge while reducing surface heat.

Located in Cyberjaya, about 30kms from the nation’s capital, DC2 also addresses sovereignty concerns by keeping sensitive information within the country.

In 2023, STT GDC, one of the world’s fastest-growing data centre providers, and Basis Bay, formed a joint venture to develop, construct and operate data centre projects in Kuala Lumpur and Cyberjaya in Malaysia. Basis Bay holds the controlling interest and leads its design and construction.

“This new high-tech facility reflects investors’ confidence in Malaysia’s competitiveness as a regional digital hub, thus strengthening the national data ecosystem that is the backbone of economic development based on artificial intelligence and digital innovation,” said Gobind Singh. “The strategic collaboration between Basis Bay and STT GDC has also strengthened Malaysia’s position as a destination of choice for global investors, proving the ability of local companies to develop world-class data centre infrastructure that is secure, sustainable and driven by local innovation,” he added.

As of June 2025, a total of 143 data centre investment projects with a total value of RM144.4 billion (US$ 34.5 billion) have been approved in Malaysia which is expected to create more than 1,400 high-skilled job opportunities. The sector’s rapid growth was also driven by the implementation of the SALAM undersea cable project, the expansion of the national 5G network as well as the RM7.9 billion allocation for TVET training focused on AI technology and applications under the MADANI Budget 2026, according to a statement from the Digital Ministry.

Established in 1996, Basis Bay is present in 22 countries and over 50 locations globally. The Green Data Centre located in Cyberjaya is its flagship project.
