BAM Digital Realty, a joint venture between Digital Realty and Brookfield Infrastructure, has started the construction work on its first data center facility in India. The facility is located at Chennai’s Ambattur Industrial Estate and expected to be operational later this year.
When fully constructed, the campus where the facility is located will have a maximum capacity of 100 megawatts (MW). To address India’s expanding need for digital infrastructure, the project’s first phase will offer 20 MW of critical capacity.
According to a previous report, the joint venture between NYSE-listed Digital Realty and Brookfield Asset Management’s flagship listed infrastructure subsidiary Brookfield Infrastructure is making progress with its aim to build, own, and run data centers in India.
BAM Digital Realty then paid approximately Rs 230 crore for a 10-acre land parcel in Ambattur, marking one of its first-ever direct purchases of land parcels for the construction of a large data center in the country.
In July, Brookfield Infrastructure Partners and Digital Realty, the largest global provider of cloud and carrier-neutral data center, colocation, and interconnection solutions Engaged into a 50:50 cooperation for this project specific to India.
According to Arpit Agrawal, managing director, head of infrastructure, India & Middle East, Brookfield Infrastructure Group, with the opening of their first data center, they begin their journey to help the Indian government’s Digital India vision, which aims to ensure data inclusivity for all.
