According to a recent statement released by the Office of Revanth Reddy, the Chief Minister of Telangana, Amazon Web Services (AWS) is all set to increase its presence in the southern Indian state’s capital city of Hyderabad.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) posted that the global technology giant “is set to significantly expand its data center facilities and workforce in Hyderabad” and that this was the result of “productive discussions with Amazon’s senior leadership”. Talks were led by Telangana IT Minister Sridhar Babu Duddilla.
AWS Vice President Kerry Person reflected on his meeting with the Telangana delegation in a post on LinkedIn, saying that it “set the groundwork for future investments into AWS infrastructure in Telangana,” adding, “The Hyderabad Region is a key component of AWS’s strategy in India, and I am excited by the opportunity to further expand in Hyderabad to support customers on their digital and AI transformations across India.”
Shedding light on AWS’s journey in Hyderabad, Person wrote, “When we launched the AWS Region in Hyderabad in 2022, we announced plans to invest US$4.4 billion (approx. INR 36,300 crores) into the Region by 2030. This is estimated to support an average of more than 48,000 full-time jobs annually (2022-2030), and contribute US$7.6 billion (approx. INR 63,600 crores) to India’s gross domestic product by 2030.”
At present AWS has an infrastructure region in Hyderabad, with three operational data centers. According to the CMO post, there are more such projects in the pipeline, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) enabled services.
According to Mordor Intelligence, “The Hyderabad Data Center Market size in terms of installed base is expected to grow from 54.53 megawatt in 2024 to 430.99 megawatt by 2030, at a CAGR of 20.12% during the forecast period (2024-2030).” The market growth has been on the back of an increase in cloud adoption, the AI/ML boom, as well as digital transformation of many private enterprises as well as public sector undertakings.
Apart from AWS, Hyderabad has also attracted investment in data centers from several other international technology giants such as Microsoft, Google, IBM etc. Today Hyderabad is home to over two dozen data centers from national and international players such as CapitaLand, CtrlS Datacenters, Pi Datacenters, ST Telemedia Global Data Centers, and a joint venture between Web Werks and Iron Mountain Datacenters.
