In 2023, Amazon has added 39 new renewable energy projects in Europe adding more than one gigawatt of clean energy capacity, the company has announced this week.
The company, which includes Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers, aims to run all fulfillment centers, physical stores and data centers off of 100% renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of the original 2030 target. Statistics released by Amazon reveal that last year, 90% of the company’s energy use was powered by renewable sources. Last year alone, across the continent Amazon’s investment into renewable power projects generated €2.4 billion in economic investment, as well as creating over 3900 jobs.
Projects include 160 wind and solar farms across 13 European countries. Once these are in full operation, an anticipated 5.8 gigawatts of clean energy will provide power to over 4.7 million homes.
It also spans to include 15 rooftop solar installations on Amazon’s facilities, as well as construction of the company’s first solar farm in Greece. Investment seeks to accelerate decarbonisation as the nations move to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.
AWS holds the largest global infrastructure of any provider and with this ever increasing, concerns for sustainability are considerable as the industry seeks to move towards greener sources of energy as demand increases. Since 2021, Amazon has established itself as Europe’s biggest corporate purchaser of renewable energy due to their investment in wind and solar.
