Amazon Data Services Pvt Ltd., has reportedly purchased a 38-acre land parcel in Palava, near Mumbai. According to local media reports, the land was purchased from Macrotech Developers (Lodha Group) for Rs 450 crores (US$ 53 million).
AWS has two data center infrastructure regions in India – the AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region, launched in 2016, and the AWS Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region, launched in November 2022. Readers would recall that in 2023, AWS had revealed plans to invest Rs 1,05,600 crores (US$ 12.7 billion) into cloud infrastructure in India by 2030. This was when it had also acquired around 4 acres of land in Powai from L&T, via a long-term lease spanning nearly 18 years.
The Economic Times now reports that AWS is planning to build a hyperscale data center on this newly acquired land in Palava. The publication further reported that with this deal, AWS’s India subsidiary Amazon Data Services India will also get to develop 4.16 million sq ft, as per previously sanctioned floor-space index (development potential).
Meanwhile, Hindustan Times cited documents accessed by Propstack, an Indian real estate data, analytics and workflow solutions platform, and reported that the transaction was registered on November 12, and that the land was spread across Asode and Burdul villages in Ambernath near Mumbai.
This development follows an announcement by the Office of the Chief Minister of Telangana in August this year, that AWS “is set to significantly expand its data center facilities and workforce in Hyderabad” and that this was the result of “productive discussions with Amazon’s senior leadership”.
