Amazon Web Services (AWS) and SoftBank both unveiled US$ 3 billion investments respectively this week for rapid acceleration in America’s AI and cloud-computing expansion.
Amazon today announced on its website, a US$ 3 billion investment to construct a new data center campus in Warren County, Mississippi. The campus will extend Amazon’s advanced cloud and AI infrastructure powered by custom chips and energy-efficient servers into the Mississippi Delta.
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said, “This US$ 3 billion investment by Amazon is the largest in Warren County’s history and another massive win for our state.”
David Zapolsky, chief global affairs and legal officer, AWS said, “Amazon’s US$ 3 billion investment in Warren County will create lasting opportunities for Mississippi families and communities, building on our more-than-a-decade-long partnership with the Magnolia State.”
The project will deliver significant tax revenue, expand opportunities for small businesses, and transform Vicksburg into a rising southern technology hub. The region’s strategic location along the Mississippi River, once central to agriculture and river commerce, is now positioned to anchor high-tech infrastructure development.
In Madison County, where Amazon is currently developing two data center campuses, more than 75 Mississippi companies employing thousands, are engaged in various roles. Some of Amazon’s investments include data center campuses, and five renewable energy projects generating 616 MWs—equivalent to powering 152,000 U.S. homes.
On a similar note, SoftBank announced yesterday plans to invest up to US$ 3 billion to convert an electric-vehicle factory in Lordstown, Ohio, into a manufacturing center for modular data-center units supporting OpenAI’s next wave of AI facilities. The plant was purchased in August for US$ 375 million and will supply equipment for data centers in Milam County, Texas, and additional sites tied to OpenAI’s national expansion as reported by Reuters, quoting The Information.
The investment forms part of SoftBank’s broader U.S. AI strategy, including an US$ 18 billion commitment to a joint venture announced at the White House earlier this year. The Lordstown facility will also host a small demonstration data center, with production expected to begin early next year. The project aligns with the US$ 500 billion Stargate initiative, a nationwide advanced AI network planned by SoftBank, Oracle, and OpenAI.
These combined commitments from Amazon and SoftBank highlight a rapidly intensifying race to build the physical infrastructure capable of sustaining new facilities in the AI era.
