Hyperscale data center operator AirTrunk has secured RM 9.5 billion (US$ 2.3 billion) in green financing under its Green Financing Framework to support the sustainable development of its JHB2 hyperscale data center campus in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
According to a press release, this is AirTrunk’s largest single-asset financing deal to date and the largest green project finance transaction for a single data center in Malaysia. The financing was backed by a consortium of 30 local and international financial institutions and marks the first time AirTrunk has secured financing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
“This green financing demonstrates how digital infrastructure can be developed responsibly. As one of the largest issuers of sustainable finance in the global data centre industry, we will continue to invest in infrastructure that prioritises energy and water efficiency while ensuring the
benefits extend beyond our campuses through meaningful contribution to support local communities,” said Pei Jet Lim, AirTrunk Vice President and Malaysia Country Head.
AirTrunk has designed the JHB2 facility to achieve industry-leading energy and water efficiency. To achieve this, the company is targeting a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.37 and will use water-efficient cooling technology.

This Green Loan also delivers blue impact through the implementation of water efficiency technology defined as per IFC Blue Finance Guidelines Version 2.0,” said Vikram Kumar, IFC Regional Industry Director for Infrastructure and Natural Resources in the Asia Pacific region.
Margin savings generated through the transaction will be used to support AirTrunk’s social impact programs in Malaysia, including water recycling at schools through Gravity Water and Water Watch Penang, disaster relief through MERCY Malaysia, and STEM Education initiatives with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
AirTrunk’s JHB2 data center campus was announced in February 2025 to complement JHB1 with a capacity of more than 270 MW. In April 2026 the company announced two additional campuses, JHB3 and JHB4, which would bring the firm’s total capacity across the four campuses to over 700 MW.
As of June 2026, Malaysia has 55 operational data centers clustered in the Johor hubs of Iskandar Puteri, Sedenak, and Johor Bahru, along with Cyberjaya in Selangor, according to Arizton Advisory and Intelligence. Johor is one of the main destinations for data center operators with global firms like DayOne, Princeton Digital Group, and AirTrunk establishing a presence in the region.
