Australian data center operator GreenSquare today announced that the first stage of its SYD1 data centre campus in Norwest Business Park, Western Sydney, is now operational, following the adaptive reuse of a data center originally opened in 1995.

The AI-ready data center was completed and ready for service in eight months with Australian neocloud Sharon AI being its first customer. Sharon AI is deploying approximately 8,200 NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra GPUs, a significant deployment of NVIDIA HGX B300 infrastructure in Australia.

GreenSquare retained the existing slab and much of the structure rather than demolishing and rebuilding. The data halls were relocated to the ground floor, to accommodate latest-generation, high-density compute without additional structural reinforcement. This increased IT capacity by 275 per cent while substantially reducing structural carbon.

SYD1 has a projected power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.20 and potable water usage effectiveness (WUE) of less than 0.1 litres per kilowatt-hour, both below the NSW Government guideline benchmarks of 1.25 and 1.0, respectively. It uses a closed-loop cooling system and rainwater harvesting.

An independent assessment by engineering consultants TTW found that the adaptive reuse retained 92 per cent of the building’s existing structural carbon. Combined with low-carbon concrete, it resulted in 76 per cent lower structural upfront carbon per square metre and 93 per cent lower carbon per kilowatt of IT capacity compared with a new-build facility.

Main construction works began in February 2026 with more than 350,000 hours of work recorded without a lost-time injury. About 400 people worked on site at peak time with teams operating around the clock during critical stages of the construction.

The NSW Government’s Investment Delivery Authority has endorsed a proposed 80 MW second stage. GreenSquare is backed by programs managed by Partners Group.

GreenSquare Chief Technology Officer, Joshua Martens, said: “We saw an opportunity to give a 30-year-old data centre a completely new purpose. By rethinking the building’s configuration, introducing prefabricated systems design, and using the latest technology to reduce carbon, we’ve created a facility that can support some of today’s most demanding compute requirements while using resources far more efficiently.”
